A richly woven dystopia – this dramatic lockdown album mixes lively acoustic folk-rock with desolate pastoral pieces…. An album of well realised ambition” ★★★★ – Neil Spencer, The Guardian & The Observer

“Laura Ward’s lovely voice sweetens the wilfully jagged edges of fellow singer Ben Webb, as they direct songs about executions, workhouse whistleblowers and traumatised soldiers to the heart” – Jude Rogers, The Guardian

“Beautifully produced by Tom Pryor, Neighbours and Sisters is the work of a talented and varied quartet. They can be cosmopolitan in one breath, ethereal in the next. The rapid evolution of BirdInTheBelly into one of our finest folk acts is a joy to behold” – Folk Radio UK

“These are songs performed with directness & clarity. The vocals of Laura Ward have a crystal purity;when they entwine with the gruff, grizzled delivery of Ben Webb the contrast creates something stunningly beautiful…on the basis of Bird in the Belly, English traditional music is alive and well and has a fine future ★★★★” – RnR Magazine

Bird in the Belly is a Brighton-based Folk group consisting of folk-duo Hickory Signals (Laura Ward and Adam Ronchetti), alt-folk singer-songwriter Ben Webb (Jinnwoo, Green Ribbons), and multi-instrumentalist and producer Tom Pryor. Together they collect little known and forgotten lyrics, poems and stories from around the UK, and set them to their own “hypnotically original compositions” (fRoots)..

Their sound is raw and bare-boned with “distinctively contemporary and earthy vocalising” (R2 Magazine) – and harks back to the 1960’s Folk Revival sound. Their debut album ‘The Crowing’ (March 2018, GF*M Records) was met with critical acclaim, the Sunday Express giving the album 5/5 and calling it folk album of the year.

Their debut album The Crowing was released 23rd March 2018 and the group is back with their much anticipated second album Neighbours and Sisters released October 2019.

Following a showcase at Manchester Folk Festival in 2018, the band enjoyed a busy summer in 2019, playing folk festivals including Moseley, Purbeck, Warwick and Gate to Southwell. Following a couple of years of Covid standstill gigs-wise, the band are now planning a busy schedule of live shows during 2022 including Sidmouth Folk Festival in August 2022. Find out more over on the Live Dates page.

Alongside recording, the group has been working on a feature length documentary to support the album, interviewing the likes of June Tabor, Frankie Armstrong, Stick in the Wheel, Fellside Record, Rootbeat Records, Ian Anderson (fRoots Editor), Lisa Knapp, Gerry Diver, Naomi Bedford and The Rails about the contemporary folk scene.

The Local Presents

For nigh-on two decades, The Local London has been an ebb and flow affair. A labour of love (and ALL the other emotions) for founder Howard Monk and many (any) of the brilliant folks who have worked at and with The Local, to bring shows and tours together by some of the finest waifs and strays making music at this, that or at any other of those times. Before The Local there was Knom Music. There was nothing at all for a time (which neatly coincided with a global pandemic). Some acts who have passed through the revolving door that we are, you may have subsequently seen headlining festivals or arenas. Stadiums even. Most of the folks who have worked with us have similarly gone on to great things.

The Local is back for 2022, dipping some toes back into the water. Because the water is just lovely. And we can’t wait to get our heads wet, all over again.

Rooted in Live Music, THE LOCAL has been an independent promoter of exciting new music and events for approaching 20 years. Always working with the finest artists and venues to ensure amazing and compelling events happen.

The Local have promoted their own festival events Europe-wide as well as working closely with other festivals helping to curate including CAMP BESTIVAL, WILDERNESS, SECRET GARDEN PARTY, END OF THE ROAD etc as well as curating a number of sold out events at Aces & Eights and across London as part of their End Festival.
